Some people in procurement think consolidation is bad—fewer options, less competition. But from a quality standpoint, it’s actually a positive. Greif now concentrates on its core steel, plastic, and fiber drum business (where they have decades of expertise), while PCA handles the paper side. Specialization usually means better specs, tighter tolerances, and more consistent quality because the teams aren’t stretched across unrelated product lines.

I said this internally when the deal was announced: ‘If we focus on what we’re actually good at—industrial containers for hazardous and sensitive goods—we’ll raise the bar for everyone.’ Early indications show that’s happening. Here’s what I tell my team: evaluate vendors on total cost of ownership, not unit price. Factor in failure rates, reorder lead times, and compatibility with your filling machinery. And always—always—check the actual specs on a sample batch before signing a long-term contract.

If you’ve ever had a delivery arrive damaged, you know that sinking feeling. The added cost of a proven supplier like Greif is basically insurance against that. I’m not saying it’s the right choice for everyone—if you’re moving clean water in closed loops, go with the cheapest compliant drum. But if you’re dealing with chemicals, high-value goods, or cross-border shipments, skimping on packaging is a bet I wouldn’t take.
